Wind farm at Port Fairy

Danish firm Vestas is reportedly choosing to go with cheaper imported steel, to build its 360-million dollar wind farm at Port Fairy.

Keppel Prince Engingeering in Portland is warning the community faces a "jobs armageddon" if the Federal Government does not direct the company to use Victorian steel.

The Age reports more than 150 jobs are at risk.

A spokeswoman for Vestas told the paper, the company’s preference was to use local suppliers if they satisfied safety, quality and cost criteria, but Keppel Prince’s bid was unsuccessful.
