HFNL Statement

League makes call on 2021 season

In a HFNL Statement dated 2 September, the HFNL indicated that should there be no confirmation from State Government and AFL Victoria/Netball Victoria that training and competition can resume by 13 September, the HFNL Final Series will be cancelled for all Saturday Competitions.

In line with the announcements from the Victorian Premier on Wednesday 8 September and the published Restricted Activity Directions for Regional Victoria, community sport competition will not resume by our desired Semi-Finals start date of 18 September. With this information, the HFNL Executive can confirm the following:

Saturday Competitions
The 2021 HFNL Final Series will be cancelled for all Saturday Competitions. No Premierships will be awarded for the 2021 season.

Sunday Competitions (Grand Final)
The HFNL remain committed to facilitating the Grand Final of the Sunday Competitions if possible. As such, the HFNL have revised their position on the Sunday Junior Grand Final. If a resumption of community sport be permitted by the weekend commencing 2 October, Grand Finals for the Sunday Competitions will proceed.

The HFNL acknowledges the challenging circumstances the entire HFNL community has faced not just this season, but since the pandemic began 18 months ago. We acknowledge this is not the outcome for our Saturday Competitions that the entire HFNL community had hoped for. We wish to make note of the significant efforts of many different people to facilitate matches throughout 2021 when restrictions have allowed.

The HFNL would like to thank all member clubs and their volunteers, umpires, players & parents for their collaboration throughout the season. We would also like to thank and acknowledge all HFNL Sponsors and supporters, in particular our Major Sponsors: Sungold, McDonalds, Lyndoch living and Powercor. We acknowledge the critical role football and netball plays in many people’s live, and stress that whilst we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the HFNL Final Series for Saturday competitions, we note that getting back to football and netball this year has brought joy in times of great uncertainty for the community. The HFNL are confident that the adversity we have all faced these past 2 seasons will hold us all in good stead for 2022 and beyond.

The HFNL wait in anticipation for further easing of restrictions that may allow the Sunday Junior Grand Final to proceed in line with the above plans. We will continue to monitor announcements from State Government and AFL Victoria/Netball Victoria.
