Regional Communities, like Hamilton and Portland are set to be hardest hit by the Federal Government’s cut to the coronavirus supplement for those on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and parenting payments.

Latest figures reveal the nation's economy will lose $31.3 billion and 145,000 full-time jobs over the next two years with those in regiona and rural areas the most-impacted.

CEO of the Australian Council of Social Service, Doctor Cassandra Goldie, said it's time for the government to provide permanent and adequate support for people on low incomes.

Dr Goldie said, “The 1.6 million people on the Jobseeker payment, especially the 700,000 people who are already unemployed long-term, will need all the help they can get to compete in a tough jobs market, and meet the basics in the meantime.”

“Employment programs must be scaled up quickly in response to mass unemployment. When this happens there’s always a risk that schemes designed in Canberra don’t meet local needs.” She said.
