"An overreach"

Facebook made good on a threat to eradicate news on the platform.

The situation evolved yesterday morning due to the government pursuing laws that would force it to pay publishers for journalism that appears in people's feeds.

Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg said the Government had no warning of Facebook's plans.

The move restricted access to the pages of some state government departments, public health organisations, support services and weather forecasts.

Member for the south-west coast Roma Brittnell had her news-feed wiped as well, she called the move an "overreach".

“I think it's an overreach on behalf of Facebook, I use the Facebook page to inform the community particularly during covid during the rapid changing environment that we're all having to adapt to. So it's a community service and I'm trying to help people in the community understand, I think it's very much an overreach on behalf of Facebook.”

Ms Britnell said, “I'm pleased that the federal government are working hard to correct the situation. We need to have good reliable news sources and when they're not, that's a concern. But this approach by Facebook to hold community services who provide information on this platform to hold them to ransom is quite poor behaviour on behalf of the company.”

Ms Britnell’s Facebook page has since been restored.
